What is Heat Stress? 

Heat stress is the buildup of heat in the body that is generated by the muscles during work and of heat coming from warm and hot environments. When the body becomes overheated, less blood goes to the active muscles, brain, and other internal organs. Heat stress can result in heat stroke, heat exhaustion, heat cramps or heat rashes.

Leading Factors Contributing to Heat Stress

  • High Temperature and Humidity: Elevated temperatures combined with high humidity levels prevent the body from effectively cooling down through sweat evaporation.
  • Direct Sun or Heat Exposure: Prolonged exposure to direct sunlight or other heat sources significantly increases body temperature.
  • Limited Air Movement: Environments with poor air circulation hinder the cooling effect of sweat evaporation.
  • Physical Exertion: Intense physical activities generate internal heat, adding to the body’s thermal load.

  • Avoid Direct Sunlight: Stay in shaded areas and use protective measures like hats and sunscreen to minimize direct exposure to the sun.
  • Enhance Air Circulation: Use fans or air conditioning to promote airflow and help the body cool down.
  • Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water throughout the day. Avoid alcohol, caffeinated beverages, and heavy meals, which can contribute to dehydration.
  • Wear Appropriate Clothing: Opt for light, light-colored, and loose-fitting clothing to facilitate sweat evaporation and keep the body cool.

Emergency Response

In cases of suspected heat stroke or severe heat exhaustion, immediate action is essential:

  • Call 911 or Local Emergency Services: Ensure professional medical help is on the way.
  • Move to a Cool Area: Relocate the affected individual to a shaded or air-conditioned space.
  • Cool the Body: Loosen or remove heavy clothing, provide cool drinking water, and use fans or mist with water to lower body temperature.
